William Erik Kramer is a former American football quarterback who was born in Encino, California on November 6, 1964. He went to Burbank, California’s John Burroughs High School. Kramer played quarterback at Los Angeles Pierce College before transferring to North Carolina State University, where he completed his college football career. Although he was not selected by an NFL club, he did play for the Atlanta Falcons as a substitute player during the NFL players strike in 1987. After that, he’d play for the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL.
After Rodney Peete was sidelined due to injury, Kramer returned to the NFL in 1991 and became a surprise starter for the Detroit Lions. Kramer started 13 games for the Lions, helping them to a 12-4 record, their first playoff win since the 1950s, and a trip to the NFC Championship Game. In Detroit, Kramer was known as “Brass,” a media-friendly abbreviation of “Brass Balls.” After replacing the injured Rodney Peete, Kramer called an audible on his first series as the Lions’ quarterback, earning the nickname. “This guy’s got brass balls,” one Lions offensive lineman remarked to another. In 1991, Kramer was a huge hit as a signal-caller, earning him the moniker “Kramer.” He was also known as “Cosmo” since he had the same last name as the fictional Cosmo Kramer.
