Doug DeCinces (born August 29, 1950) is a former Major League Baseball third baseman who played in the American League. This is how he pronounces his last name: “de-SIN-say.” He and Dwight Evans were teammates in the Pony League and Colt League baseball leagues in Northridge, California. It was the Baltimore Orioles with whom he started his big league career late in the 1973 season, and he remained with the team for the next eight seasons. On June 22, 1979, at Memorial Stadium, he hit a game-winning home run against Detroit Tigers reliever Dave Tobik, in what is considered to be one of the most memorable games in Orioles history. Going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Orioles were behind the Tigers 5-3 in the series.
Singleton blasted a single home run off Tobik with one out in the ninth inning to pull the Orioles within one run. A single by Eddie Murray put the Orioles in scoring position. With two outs, DeCinces hit a two-run home run to give the team a 6-5 win. As a result of the victory, it has been dubbed “the night Oriole Magic was born.” After the game and his home run were over, DeCinces stated that “something triggered something” and that “the emotion just multiplied from there.” He also stated that the resulting atmosphere of excitement was in no small part due to the enthusiastic call of the home run by announcers Bill O’Donnell and Charley Eckman on the Orioles’ radio network. As a result of their efforts, the Orioles won the American League pennant in 1979. In order to create space for Cal Ripken, Jr., the Baltimore Orioles sold DeCinces to the California Angels in exchange for Dan Ford in 1982. (Ironically, DeCinces began his professional baseball career in Baltimore as the Orioles’ third baseman Brooks Robinson’s replacement.) Over the course of fifteen seasons (1973–1987) in the big leagues, DeCinces represented three different organisations, including nine seasons with the Orioles and six seasons with the Los Angeles Angeles Angels. After being released by the Angels on September 23, 1987, he played in four games for the Saint Louis Cardinals late in the 1987 season, capping out his big league career with the Cardinals. In 1988, DeCinces travelled to Japan to play with the Yakult Swallows. He was sidelined for the last two months of the season due to back issues and, on the recommendation of his physicians, he decided to retire from baseball after the conclusion of the season. DeCinces was a member of the American League All-Star team in 1983, his first season in the league. As a student-athlete at Los Angeles Pierce College, he was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. On August 26, 2006, he was officially inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame.
A allegation of insider trading in advance of a business acquisition was filed against Doug DeCinces and three other individuals on August 4, 2011, by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). DeCinces and his associates were accused of making more than $1.7 million in illegal profits when Abbott Laboratories Inc., based in Abbott Park, Ill., announced its intention to purchase Advanced Medical Optics Inc. through a tender offer. The SEC filed a civil lawsuit against DeCinces and his associates. DeCinces agreed to pay $2.5 million to resolve the SEC’s accusations against him without admitting or disputing the allegations against him. In November 2012, he was indicted on insider trading charges stemming from the same event, and he was also charged with securities fraud and money laundering.
