David Knapp Stockton (born November 2, 1941) is a professional golfer from the United States who has won tournaments on both the PGA and Champions Tours. Stockton was born in the city of San Bernardino in the state of California. In 1964, he graduated from the University of Southern California and began his professional career. The Colonial National Invitation, which he won in 1967, was his first PGA Tour victory. He was one of two Champion’s Choice invitees chosen by former Colonial champions; he is the only Champion’s Choice invitee to win the Colonial in the year of the invitation.
His greatest year was 1974, when he won three times, however he only won two majors in 1970 and 1976, both of which were PGA Championships. In 1970, he played the final round with Arnold Palmer and shot a 73, which included an eagle and a double-bogey on the seventh and eighth holes, as well as a bogey on the thirteenth hole despite hitting a ball in the water. In the end, this effort was enough to beat Palmer and Bob Murphy by two strokes. The final round of the 1976 PGA Championship, which was held at the Congressional Country Club, had to be postponed until Monday due to rain. Stockton avoided a three-man playoff with Raymond Floyd and Don January by sinking a fifteen-foot par putt at the 72nd hole. Stockton began playing on the Senior PGA Tour (now the Champions Tour) in 1991 and quickly rose to the top of the money list in both 1993 and 1994.
