Catherine Johnson (born 14 October 1957) is a British writer who has written for both theatre and screen. Her writing for the musical Mamma Mia! and screenplay for the film of the same name, which became the highest grossing UK film of all time and the best-selling UK DVD of all time in January 2009, are her most well-known works. Johnson attended Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School at Wotton and grew up in Wickwar, near Wotton-under-Edge. She was dismissed from school at the age of sixteen, married at the age of eighteen, and divorced at the age of twenty-four. She relocated to Bristol and found herself jobless, with one kid to feed and another on the way, when she saw an advertisement in the local paper for a playwriting competition sponsored by the Bristol Old Vic and HTV West. She created Rag Doll, a drama about incest and child abuse, under the alias Maxwell Smart, which won the competition and was performed by the Bristol Old Vic. Following that, he wrote plays for the Bush
Theatre in London, the Bristol Old Vic, and Show of Strength, as well as television shows including Casualty, Love Hurts, and Byker Grove. Johnson resides in Bristol and has a home in London’s Pimlico neighbourhood. Johnson established The Catherine Johnson Award for Best Play written by the previous year’s five Pearson Playwrights’ Scheme scholarship recipients in 2007. In 1991, Catherine was awarded a bursary under the programme. Catherine is a supporter of the Wotton Electric Picture House in Wotton-under-Edge, Bristol’s Myrtle Theatre Company, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
