Willie Nelson’s sister Bobbie Lee Nelson (born January 1, 1931) is an American pianist and singer who is a member of his band The Family. Her grandmother trained her to play the piano with a pump organ when she was five years old, and her grandfather purchased her a piano after she performed well at gospel conventions in Hillsboro, Texas. She began singing alongside her brother in school plays and at church. She married Bud Fletcher, who had founded his own band, The Texans, when she was sixteen years old. She played the piano, and her brother sang and played guitar. After she divorced Bud
Fletcher in 1955, she disbanded the band. She travelled to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1961, following a nervous breakdown induced by the death of Bud Fletcher, and the custody of her children was entrusted to Fletcher’s parents, to work for the Hammond Organ Company. She relocated to Austin, Texas, after regaining her children. After her third marriage ended in divorce, she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1965. She sang in restaurants and other venues until her brother from New York summoned her for a session in 1973. She played piano with Willie Nelson during his Atlantic Records sessions, which produced The Troublemaker, Shotgun Willie, Phases and Stages, and Red Headed Stranger. In the same year, she became a full-time member of The Family and began travelling with her brother.
