Allan Beswick is a Manchester-based radio host who hosts the BBC Radio Manchester breakfast show. Beswick worked as a soldier, a bus driver, a mental health nurse, and for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau before becoming a radio presenter; it was during his time at the C.A.B. that he began to appear as a guest on Dave Lincoln and Friends, a show on 194 Radio City, an independent commercial station in Liverpool. He worked for Lancashire station Red Rose Radio in the mid to late 1980s, where he first presented an afternoon show that won him a Sony national radio award. He later hosted The Allan Beswick Late Night Show, a late-night phone-in show that generated virtually equal numbers of listeners and controversy.
His late-night broadcast received audiences comparable to many radio stations’ breakfast shows. The program’s overall ‘audience reach’ was over 100,000 listeners per night, but total listenership across the North West, West Yorkshire, and North Wales frequently exceeded 500,000. He was noted for his blunt, uncompromising approach, his ability to explain his position adamantly, and his habit of insulting callers with whom he disagreed or didn’t get along. He was also notorious for his on-air loathing of Liverpudlians (“scousers”), which ironically made him very popular with Liverpool listeners, who saw him as a spokesman for woollybacks – those from outside the city – and all that was wrong with them. He has recently claimed that it was all a ruse and that he has no issues with Merseysiders. Train spotters were another group who enraged him. Callers were frequently greeted with a greeting.
