How much is 6 bits

dated 75 cents (0.75 US dollars). A “bit” was a former unit of currency equal to one-eighth of a dollar, used until the US adopted decimal currency in 1794. The term survived into the 20th century, especially in reference to 25 cents (“two bits”).

In early America, “bit” was used for some Spanish and Mexican coins that circulated and were worth one-eighth of a peso, or about 12 and one-half cents. So, in the U.S., two bits has routinely equaled about 25 cents, and four bits has typically been considered to be about 50 cents.

The word “bit” long meant, in England, any coin of a low denomination. In early America, “bit” was used for some Spanish and Mexican coins that circulated and were worth one-eighth of a peso, or about 12 and one-half cents. Hence, two bits would have equaled about 25 cents.

2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar. In sequence that means they are describing 25 cents, 50 cents, 75 cents, a dollar. Thus a bit is half of 25 cents. The origin of bit comes from the practice of cutting the Spanish dollar (peso) into eight radial pieces to make change.

Two bits were worth 25 cents, four bits 50 cents and six bits 75 cents. Because there was no one-bit coin in circulation, a 10-cent piece (dime) was sometimes called a short bit. In saloons, two bits were good for two drinks, a good cigar or a “smile” (a 2 ½-ounce bottle of whiskey).

The Spanish dollar coin was worth eight reales and could be physically cut into eight pieces, or “bits,” to make change — hence the colloquial name “pieces of eight.” The dollar coin could also be cut into quarters, and “two bits” became American slang for a quarter dollar, or 25 cents.

The supposed value of the bit is twelve and a half cents, eight to the dollar. When it comes to two bits, the quarter-dollar stands for the required amount. But how about an odd bit? The nearest coin to it is a dime, which is, short by a fifth.

The bit time for a 10 Mbit/s NIC is 100 nanoseconds. That is, a 10 Mbit/s NIC can eject 1 bit every 0.1 microsecond (100 nanoseconds = 0.1 microseconds). Bit time is distinctively different from slot time, which is the time taken for a pulse to travel through the longest permitted length of network medium.
