Eric Demetric Dickerson, a former professional football player from the United States, played 11 seasons in the National Football League as a running back (born September 2, 1960). Dickerson was an All-American college football player for the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University.
After being selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, he played professionally for the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons. Throughout his NFL career, he ran for about 13,000 yards. In 1984, he set an NFL record with 2,105 yards in a single season. Following his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999, Dickerson was named to the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019.
Dickerson originally intended to attend Texas A&M, but he then changed his mind, choosing Oklahoma, Southern California, or Southern Methodist University instead (SMU). His great-great aunt convinced him to stay in Texas so he could attend Southern Methodist University because she adored SMU coach Ron Meyer.
During his final year of high school, Dickerson started driving a brand-new Pontiac Trans-Am, which caused a recruiting problem. Around the time he committed to A&M, Dickerson supposedly began driving a brand-new Pontiac Trans-Am; but, after signing with SMU, he abruptly ceased doing so because the Trans-Am had been allegedly destroyed by an enraged Aggie.
