The earliest time we can assess the baby’s relationship is at 12 weeks gestation/pregnancy: We can tell the relationship of the baby at the 12 week scan by assessing the direction of the nub. This is something that can be identified on babies at this stage and if it points vertically then it is likely to be a boy.

If you have a prenatal blood test (NIPT), you may be able to find out your baby’s relationship as early as 11 weeks of pregnancy. Ultrasounds may reveal relationship organs by 14 weeks, but they aren’t considered fully accurate until 18 weeks.

The accuracy of determining your baby’s gender increases with how far along you are in the pregnancy. The accuracy can vary from 70.3% at 11 weeks to 98.7% at 12 weeks, and 100% at 13 weeks. Eleven weeks is the earliest that relationship determination can be carried out with an ultrasound using a method called the ‘nub theory’.

20 Week Ultrasound

The three white lines—which are actually the labia with the clitoris in the middle—can resemble two buns and the meat of a hamburger. This image is more easily defined as you can see the baby’s thighs, too.

The MFM said while ultrasound was 90 percent accurate in predicting gender at 12 weeks, and she and the sonographer were fairly confident in their prediction, we should wait until our 20-week anatomy ultrasound to be sure.

Your Body at 12 Weeks of Pregnancy

During a gender scan Sonographers generally look between the legs of your baby. There are specific views that need to be seen. One would be what is known as a potty shot which shows an image of the baby from below or a view as if you are in a potty looking up.

With a male baby, it is often possible to observe the member, testicles and scrotum at the second trimester routine scan.”
