Peter mentions he has written 23 short stories to Reese Witherspoon’s Debbie in the first two minutes of the new romcom, Your Place or Mine.
The movie’s opening scene takes viewers back to 2003 when Peter and Debbie are making out after an exciting game of poker with their friends. It gives an early-aughts drunken hookup vibe.
While making out, Peter gets excited after seeing books on Debbie’s bookshelf.
She then reveals she is a big reader, to which he smiles and replies, “That’s great. Yeah, I’m gonna be a big writer one day. I want to be.”
He then talks about his writing and says he will send his short stories in the morning. “I think you’ll like them. I’ve actually written 23 short stories,” Pete continues.
Debbie finds Peter’s book in New York
The two do not end together immediately as Peter warns her to remain away from him because he’s “garbage,” but they remain friends.
Twenty years later (it’s 2023), the pair are still friends and talk on the phone daily.
Debbie has to move to New York to do a course, and Coleman decides to head to Los Angeles in her place to babysit her 13-year-old son named Jack.
After moving to NY, she meets Minka (Zoe Chao), one of Pete’s ladyfriends.
The two go out for a drink, and at the bar, Deb sees her favorite book publisher Theo Martin (Jesse Williams).
She has read all his books, even the unpopular ones. Deb even lands a date with the publisher. Soon, she finds Peter’s unpublished book inside a oven.
He lost his dad when he was young and penned a book about it.
Deb proceeds to read his book and loves it so much that she decides to give it to her favorite publisher Theo Martin.
The publisher loves the book and is ready to publish it. On the other side, Pete doesn’t have any idea about any of this.

Your Place or Mine is the newest romantic-comedy film, written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna. Wesley Kimmel, Tig Notaro, Steve Zahn, Rachel Bloom, and Griffin Matthews also appear in the movie.
In this romantic comedy film, two long-distance friends unexpectedly have life-changing experiences when certain circumstances cause them to switch homes for a while.
After some setup, the movie starts clicking when the two protagonists embark on missions to fix the biggest issues of their lives.
And as they spend much time with each other’s friends, they realize there’s so much they don’t know about each other.
They wonder if they should get together after over two decades of platonic friendship.

What saves the movie is Aline’s knack for finding real within quirky comic characters like a divorced, overprotective single mother and a swaggering guy who makes a living in New York by telling other people how to succeed.

Netflix’s Your Place or Mine is filmed in both Los Angeles and New York City, New York. The two locations have, most of the time, been the backdrops of many iconic rom-com.
The lead character Debbie lives in Los Angeles while Peter lives in New York. They later end up swapping their places for some time when Deb has to move to NY to do a course (something to do with accounting).
Moreover, the Your Place or Mine school scenes were filmed at Ansel Adams Middle School in Los Angeles.
Principal photography of the film commenced in October 2021. Deb’s house, found by Veronique Vowell, a location manager, is in LA’s Echo Park neighborhood. The interior of the house was built on stage.
Another significant location in the movie is LAX. Two crucial yet short clips are set at the airport -shot at Sunset Gower Studios.
The filming location also includes Montage Street in Brooklyn, NY.
