Margrethe II born Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid, born 16 April 1940) is Queen of Denmark and commander-in-chief of the Danish Defence.[a] Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom on 8 September 2022, she is Europe’s longest-serving current head of state, and the only current queen regnant.
How long has Queen Margrethe been a Queen?
In January 2022, HM The Queen served as Head of State of Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland for half a century. With her 50 years on the throne, The Queen is the second longest-serving monarch in Danish history – only surpassed by King Christian IV, who sat on the Danish throne for 60 years.
Margrethe is known for her strong archaeological passion and has participated in several excavations, including in Italy, Egypt, Denmark, and South America.[3] She shared this interest with her grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, with whom she spent some time unearthing artifacts near Etruria in 1962.
