How Long Does It Take To Drive From San Francisco To Los Angeles?

Drive time from San Francisco To Los Angeles is 6 hours and 31 minutes. Interstate 5 South is the shortest route between the cities.

If you plan on driving between San Francisco and Los Angeles then you have a few options to take. Some of them are way faster than others but the slower routes take you through a scenic drive.

Here are the three best routes to take between SF and LA.

1. Interstate 5

Interstate 5 is the fastest route connecting the two cities of California.

The highway runs from the Canadian border to the Mexican border. Although Interstate 5 does not connect to San Francisco directly, you will need to take I-580 E for roughly 70 miles before merging with Interstate 5 in San Joaquin County.

It takes 6 hours and 31 minutes to cover 383 miles between the two large Californian cities. However, that is if you drive at a constant speed of nearly 60 miles per hour without stopping.

If you are in a hurry then you can push the gas peddle slightly more to maintain 70 miles per hour, the hight permitted speed on I-5. It will take about 5 hours and 28 minutes if you maintain 70 miles per hour. However, most people break the journey into several days as they drive enjoying along the routes.

2. US-101 S

Taking US-101 south from San Francisco to California will take you 7 hr 14 min.

US-101 S is much longer than taking Interstate 5. The entire trip will clock 420 miles between the two cities, the number might be a favorite for some people and they might prefer to take the longer route but it is 37 miles longer in total.

You can cover the route in 7 hours and 14 minutes if you drive constantly at the posted speed of about 55 miles per hour, however, the realistic drive speed in the route is 50 miles per hour and less meaning it might take you  8 hours, 24 minutes if you drive at a constant 50 miles per hour.

While US-101 S might have a slightly longer distance to cover between the cities, it will have significantly less traffic as most people tend to take the shorter I-5 route.

3. California State Route 1

California State Route 1 which is most commonly known as Pacific Coast Highway is the longest of all taking over 10 hours to drive.

The route is almost 500 miles long but it has several sections following the coast making it filled with twists and turns. Furthermore, you would not want to drive straight from point A to point B along PCH as it lures everyone with its beauty.

Unfortunately, you might need to wait for several more weeks to be able to use Pacific Coast Highway to travel between LA and San Francisco because over 25-mile sections are still closed as of April 2023 for maintenance and repair after January 2023 storm damages.

Nevertheless, once the route opens completely, it will be one hard trip to pass.
