How do you spell rosh hashanah

General and Traditional Rosh Hashanah Messages

“Shana Tova!” (“Have a good year!”) “Shana Tova U’Metuka!” (“Have a good and sweet year!”) “Shana Tova Tikateivu!” (“May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a good year!”) “Happy Rosh Hashanah!”

To wish someone a happy Rosh Hashanah “Shanah tovah” is an appropriate greeting. The phrase means “good year” in Hebrew and can be used through the season. Some other greetings including “Leshana tovah tikatev v’tichatem” which is appropriate to say to men returning from synagogue service.

Many Jewish families will spend some of Rosh Hashanah at a Synagogue. This is the name given to the building where Jewish people go to worship. One of the traditions of Rosh Hashanah is to blow a big horn called a Shofar. One hundred notes are blown on the horn to create a special rhythm.

If one wishes to abbreviate the greeting, the grammatically correct way to do so is by saying shana tova, “a good year,” without the l’, or “for,” which stands in need of a phrase to follow it.

To wish someone a happy Rosh Hashanah, you say “Shanah tovah”. This means “good year” in Hebrew. Or “L’shanah Tovah!” meaning “for a good year”. You can also say “A wish for the New Year and always, Shalom”.

Rosh Hashanah is meant to be a day of rest, not labor. The Torah expressly forbids one to do any work on Rosh Hashanah, as well as other major Jewish holy days.

The term rosh hashanah appears once in the Bible (Ezekiel 40:1), where it has a different meaning: either generally the time of the “beginning of the year”, or possibly a reference to Yom Kippur, or to the month of Nisan.
