How Did Verne Troyer feel About Mini-Me? Why Was Verne Troyer Replaced in Harry Potter?

Verne Jay Troyer was an American actor, comedian, YouTuber, and stunt performer. He was best known for his role as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers film series. He had cartilage–hair hypoplasia and was 2 ft 8 in (81 cm) tall.

Troyer’s film career began when a former president of Little People of America contacted him, looking for someone to serve as a stunt double for the infant character “Baby Bink” in John Hughes’ film Baby’s Day Out (1994).

He gained further work as a stunt double with some minor comedic roles in several films of the 1990s, including Dunston Checks In, Jingle All the Way (both 1996), Men in Black (1997), and My Giant (1998).

After reaching a large audience as Mini-Me, Troyer portrayed Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), and played the role of Percy in Terry Gilliam’s fantasy film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). He also made several appearances as himself in reality television series, including The Surreal Life (2005), Welcome to Sweden (2007), and the sixth season of the British Celebrity Big Brother (2009).

How Did Verne Troyer feel About Mini-Me?

The character Mini-Me was a compound of stereotypes of people with dwarfism. He was hypersexual, unintelligent and aggressive.

He was not even a character in his own right but a replica of another, average-height role. Like dwarf performers in circuses of days past, his character only existed in contrast to others.

Why Was Verne Troyer Replaced in Harry Potter?

The casting of the Harry Potter films was limited to British thespians—a rule so strict it even forced producers to turn down Robin Williams for the role of Hagrid—but Verne Troyer became the rare exception when he was cast as the Gringotts banker Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Troyer was the only American actor with a major role in the film, but the character was voiced by his English co-star Warwick Davis, who also portrayed Professor Flitwick and another bank teller in the film.

By the time Griphook became more significant to the story in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Davis took over the role completely.

Davis later explained his decision to seek out the role. “Griphook has so much more depth to him than I’d ever been able to get into my work as Professor Flitwick.

So, I went in and read for David Yates and the casting director, and gave them a best shot, David left a message that I’d got the part.”
