How Did Dian Fossey Die? Murder By Wayne McGuire Discussed In CBS 60 Minutes- What Happened?

Dian Fossey was an American conservationist and primatologist who was murdered in 1985. Wayne McGuire was charged with the murder, although he denied the charge.

Fossey spent 20 years in Rwanda, and there she supported conservation initiatives, vigorously opposed poaching and tourism in animal areas, and raised awareness of gorilla intelligence.

She was murdered in her hut at a secluded camp in Rwanda in December 1985, following the shooting of a gorilla and related tensions. Although Fossey’s American research assistant was imprisoned in her absence, there is no agreement on who murdered her.

Her studies and conservation efforts aided in slowing the decline of mountain gorilla populations. Fossey was adamantly opposed to wildlife tourism because gorillas are vulnerable to human anthroponotic infections such as influenza, against which they have weak protection. Fossey documented multiple examples of gorillas dying as a result of illnesses carried by tourists.

What Happened To Dian Fossey? How & When Did She Die?

At the age of 53, Dian Fossey was declared dead. She was killed with a machete blow. Fossey was found slain in the bedroom of her lodge in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda early on December 27, 1985.

Her body was discovered face-up near the two beds where she had been sleeping, about 7 feet (2 m) away from a hole in the cabin’s wall allegedly made by her assailant(s).

Fossey’s final research assistant at Karisoke arrived at the scene with Fossey’s house servant and discovered her bludgeoned to death, noting that “when she went to check her vital signs, Fossey was already dead.”

Her cabin was robbed. However, robbery was not suspected because Fossey’s possessions remained in the cabin, including her handguns, passport, and thousands of dollars in US banknotes and traveler’s checks.

Wayne McGuire Was Charged With The Murder Of Dian Fossey: What Was His Sentence?

Wayne McGuire was prosecuted and convicted in absentia for her murder of Dian Fossey by Rwandan courts. He had a death sentence but he managed to avoid it.

McGuire was accused of murdering Fossey in order to obtain the manuscript for the sequel to her 1983 book, “Gorillas in the Mist.” During the trial, which was held in Kinyarwanda, investigators stated that McGuire was dissatisfied with his own study and desired to continue it using “any dishonest means imaginable.”

Following his return to the United States, McGuire made a brief statement in Century City, Los Angeles at a news conference, calling Fossey a “friend and mentor” and calling her death “tragic” and the allegations “outrageous.”

McGuire was mostly unknown to the public until 2005.

Dian Fossey Husband And Family Information

Dian Fossey had a husband, Alexie Forrester, from whom she separated because they began to grow apart. Dian had a very tough family. Her parents took a different way when she was six years old.

The next year, her mother remarried businessman Richard Price. Her father attempted to keep in touch, but her mother opposed it, and all communication was lost as a result. Richard Price, Fossey’s stepfather, never regarded her as his own child.

He refused to let Fossey join him or her mother at the dining room table for dinner. Richard Price, a severe disciplinarian, provided little to no emotional support for Dian Fossey.

When she was struggling with personal insecurities, Fossey turned to animals for approval. Her passion for animals started with her first pet goldfish and has lasted her entire life. She began riding horses at the age of six, receiving a letter from her school; by the time she graduated in 1954, Fossey had distinguished herself as an equestrienne.
