Alfred Unser was an American racing driver who was the younger brother of Jerry and Bobby Unser, as well as the father of Al Unser Jr.
He was the second of four men (A. J. Foyt, himself, Rick Mears, and Hélio Castroneves) to win the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race four times (1970, 1971, 1978, 1987), the fourth of five to win the race in consecutive years, and 1970, 1983, and 1985 National Champion.
The Unser family has a record of nine Indy 500 victories. He was the only person who had both a sibling (Bobby) and a child (Al Jr.) who had also won the Indianapolis 500. (coincidentally, all three captured their final Indy 500 wins racing for Team Penske). Johnny and Robby Unser, Al’s nephews, have also competed in the event.
