Though no historical records are available it is believed that the deity in the temple here is 5,000 years old According to legend, when Lord Krishna left this world and his golden city of Dwaraka was submerged in the ocean an idol of the Lord was saved from by Guru (mentor of the gods) who with the help of Vayu (the god of wind) brought it to Kerala.
The place where the deity was installed thus got the name Guruvayur and the Lord is referred to here as Guruvayurappan
