Hilaree Nelson and Brian O’Neill, her ex-husband, were married for 14 years until their blissful union transformed into a painful memory from which she tried to flee through her passion for mountaineering.
Nelson has visited some of the most remote mountain ranges in the world by fusing her passion for exploration with her love of skiing and mountaineering.
In ski mountaineering, she has accomplished many “firsts,” including linking two 8000-meter peaks in a single push, making the first ski descents on Baffin Island, and making the first ski descent of the world’s fourth-highest mountain, Lhotse.
She was a fierce advocate for wild areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and adhered to the belief that these areas were significant to the health of the earth and the human mind.
Who Is Hilaree Nelson’s Ex-Husband Brian O’Neill?
US ski mountaineer Nelson and her ex-husband, Brian O’Neill, might have been married in 2000 or 2003. Her oldest son, Frederick Quinn Oneill, is 15 years old and is the basis for the following supposition.
Basically, they might have said vows when Nelson was in her early 30s. Though not much is known about her first husband, it is said that she went through a painful divorce.
Apart from this, Nelson was one of the world’s most skilled expedition captains and ski mountaineers. She made history in 2012 when she completed the 24-hour ascent of the 8,000-meter summits of Everest and Lhotse.
Likewise, Hilaree complements her athletic endeavors by telling her many stories on stages across the nation in the hopes of igniting the imagination and passion of those she meets.
Men’s Journal recently named her as one of the most adventurous women of the last 25 years and National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurer of the Year.
Her 14 Years Of Marriage Ended In Divorce
Nelson sought solace and focus via skiing and mountaineering after a traumatic divorce.
She was distracted from her suffering by the endless drag races with a heavy pack, which kept her afloat above her murky waters.
She talked about her breakup in an article published in 2017 and claimed that after the pain she had experienced, she needed to focus on what was in front of her.
And that may be why Hilaree pushed herself so hard on back-to-back trips over the past few years to add a new set of firsts to her career. She was in the middle of a painful divorce—from her husband of 14 years, Brian O’Neill.
Hilaree’s Two Kids Quinn And Grayden From Her First Relationship
Nelson left behind her two sons, Frederick Quinn Oneill and Grayden, who were born to her during her first marriage to Brian O’Neill.
Together with her kids, Nelson was often seen skiing or hiking through the woods. Her eldest son, Quinn, was born on July 31, 2007, and her youngest son, Grayden, was born in 2005.
Moreover, the siblings are two years apart in age. In contrast, her eldest is a soccer player, as per his Instagram post.
Mountainer Nelson’s Partner Jim Morrison Is An Accomplished Athlete
Nelson’s current partner, Jim Morrison, is an outstanding athlete who began skiing as a small child alongside his brother John.
Starting with Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world, he and his ski partner Hilaree Nelson have accomplished achievements that no other skiing pair has.
The mountain is 27,940 feet and is situated between Tibet and Nepal.
In 2017, Nelson and Morrison summited Papsure, also called The Peak of Evil, in India. Two weeks later, they ascended Cassin Ridge and skied the Messner Couloir downhill.
Jim reached the top of Mount Everest and Cho Oyu in the Himalayas in May 2018. On both mountains, he skied a total of 11,000 vertical feet, including a 7,000-foot route down Cho Oyu.
Morrison, who resides in Tahoe City, California, has dedicated his entire life to climbing and skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
The Morrison Brothers Competed In High School Ski Races
He and his brother John, an exceptional mountain racer, grew up in Walnut Creek, three hours from Squaw Valley. They competed in ski races throughout high school and chased athletes like Scot Schmidt every weekend.
In 1990, Jim first visited Squaw for a ski season before deciding to make it his permanent home.
Known for having a huge heart and a strong engine, Jim quietly succeeds in most tasks, whether an Ironman triathlon or scaling Yosemite’s El Capitan, while still managing his own custom home building company in Tahoe.
Before Hilaree, Jim Was A Married Man With Wife And Kids
The emotional anguish Morrison went through nine years ago motivated him to climb the world’s highest peaks; the physical discomfort he experienced while climbing the mountain was nothing compared to that trauma.
In an airplane accident in 2011, he lost his wife and kids.
He was able to process his grief by finding a way to go outside, do what he loved, was passionate about, and was physically capable of doing in the mountains.
Four years after the accident, Morrison met Nelson, who had just gone through a difficult divorce, while climbing in Nepal. Their love relationship started six months later.
While standing on a mountaintop close to Lhotse, Mount Everest, Morrison’s journey toward recovery came full circle.
Jim And Hilaree Have Achieved Feats Together
It took dedication for big-mountain skiers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson to make their first turns atop Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world.
The waist-deep, sweet snow on the peak of the 27,940-foot Himalaya was peeling off a granite pyramid at the top of the mountain.
This triangular cliff served as their entryway into the famed Lhotse Couloir, a 2,000-foot north-facing route with a slope angle of 60 degrees and lots of high-altitude exposure.
On Sunday, September 30, 2018, at 2:30 pm, Nelson and Morrison laced up their skis on the top and became the first individuals to ski the Lhotse Couloir.
Nelson and Morrison had shared a lifelong dream of skiing Lhotse.
Nelson’s Disappearance After Skiing Down Mansula With Partner Jim
According to The New York Post, Hilaree Nelson, 49, and Jim Morrison, her climbing and romantic partner, attempted to ski down Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world.
According to Sachindra Yadav, an expedition liaison officer from the Gorkha district, which encompasses Manaslu, an avalanche is believed to have carried her off a cliff and onto the mountain’s south face, which is the opposite direction from where they meant to descend.
Earlier this month, Nelson and Morrison headed to Nepal in preparation for their ascent of Manaslu. They successfully skied down Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world that lies on the border between Nepal and Tibet, in 2018.
A government official reported that two days after going missing, Nelson, whose courageous accomplishments earned her praise from some of the world’s top climbers, was found unresponsive.
Nelson’s Parents: Her Father Wanted Her To Play Basketball
Although Nelson’s father encouraged her to play basketball, she chose to pursue something completely unrelated. From an early age, Nelson wanted to make her proud.
Ironically, she used the inherently dangerous sport of ski mountaineering to elude her father while remaining within his circle of approval.
Hilaree’s major sports were basketball, soccer, and track. She put in a lot of effort to become an athlete, and in doing so, she deftly averted conflict. Her siblings used to make fun of how she learned to duck and dive into everything.
Skiing was “a background activity” at the time, something she and her siblings would do on the weekends in the wintertime when their parents took them to Stevens Pass, Washington, on a Greyhound bus.
Her earliest memories are of being on the water. Her father would take the family out on a wooden boat for three to five weeks every summer, while her mother worked at boatyards in Seattle, refinishing teak and mahogany.
