Anthony Varrecchia is an American born on March 24, 1963 in Staten Island, New York – in this same neighborhood he was raised and spent thirty-five years of his life. Anthony and his three sisters were raised alone by their mother, a single mother.
Varrecchia had a very rough and harsh childhood as he had to struggle to support his mother who did everything in her power to raise four children on her own without any help or support. Being in school was also a challenge for him as he was bullied so much that it affected his work and school performance.
He remembers how his teachers called his mother during one of the summer schools he was attending to tell her, they didn’t think his son belonged in the classroom. Anthony Varrecchia, despite not doing well academically, said he always thought he had something different, something that set him apart from other kids; and this is how he saw the world around him, how he expressed himself with art, whether it was gardening, painting, dressing and keeping his room. After high school, he headed to the New York Institute of Technology where he earned a BA in Fine Arts.

According to him, NYC actually opened his eyes around the world, he made friends from all over the world and there was no bullying at that point in his life, but that didn’t mean that he had explored everything in his life at the time, while he still hides one aspect of his life – his sexuality.
Yet haunted by the ghosts of his past and bullies, Anthony found solace in physical training and joined a gym. With passion and dedication, he began to build strong muscles and it did him good because it gave him the confidence to stand the test of time and the assurance that no one would upset him anymore.
Growing up, Varrecchia never had a girlfriend, he dated but he never went much further than a kiss. Even as a young child, he said he knew deep down that he was not like other boys but that his environment kept him in the closet until he was 35. He knew he was gay but kept that part of his life hidden for fear of judgment and rejection.
He quickly fought his fears and came out to stand up for what and who he is in the year 2000 when he found true love. According to him, meeting Mathew, who would later become her husband, opened up her world to whole new things – be it art, social issues and other cultures.
Although Mathew was handsome, had charisma, a very colorful background that Varrecchia admired, he had his own struggles and a very troubled upbringing but for his new found love, life was bright for him. A year after they met, they signed up as domestic partners and exchanged rings on a plane trip to San Francisco. In the summer of 2002, they traveled to Vermont for a civil union.
A few weeks later they had a wedding in NewPaltz, New York, had a gorgeous one, as all the guests were in white. In the winter of 2007, the couple traveled to MA to legally marry, but were turned down because it was not legal to do so. However, in the summer of 2008, on July 5, which marked the 6th anniversary of their civil union in Vermont, they got married with the legal document of law. Unfortunately, Matthew died a few months later in a car accident.

After Matthew’s death, Anthony Varrecchia left was devastated by no friends or family to comfort him. He said he never thought he could get over his husband’s death and find love again, but the years have passed and the sun is shining for him again!
