Heather Ewart husband Barrie Cassidy is a radio personality and political journalist. Heather resides in Melbourne with her family and children.
Heather is best known for being a longstanding institution in Australian journalism. One of the handfuls of women who paved the way for women in journalism, Ewart has been known as a domineering force in Australian journalism for over four decades.
From a wedding editor at Leader Newspapers in Melbourne, Ewart embarked on a career that has led her to every arm of reporting except sports. She currently works as the face of and brain behind the popular television program Back Roads, where she tells stories of regional Australia.
She is also an acclaimed author who has published a book with the same name as her famous television show. With an armful of awards, Heather has long since vindicated her existence within journalism.
Heather Ewart Husband
Heather Ewart husband Barrie Cassidy is a TV and radio personality. Heather and Barrie got married in the mid 1990s.
The two started dating in Canberra when they both were working at ABC, Ewart as a political reporter and Cassidy as the network’s political correspondent.
However, tragedy struck their relationship when Cassidy started working for then-Prime Minister Bob Hawke. Due to her connections to the news, Ewart was seen as a security threat, and the secret service highly vetted their early relationship.
Ewart has often shared how their relationship suffered due to government officials’ constant prodding and poking. So, when Ewart received a chance to become the North American correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Commission, Cassidy left his job with Hawke and followed her soon after in 1991.
A Look At Barrie’s Career
Heather’s long-time spouse is best known as a political journalist. Barrie’s career has lasted as long as his wife has.
Like Ewart, he spent most of his career at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. In fact, he was a long-running host for Insiders, the network’s political commentary program, from 2001 to 2019.
Since 2020, he has been working as the host for One Plus One, a long-form interview program. Still, many people remember him for his work with former Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
He was informally known as Bob Hawke’s minder during his tenure with the former Prime Minister, and his resignation from the job to be with his then-girlfriend, and now wife is still discussed semi-regularly.
Heather And Barrie Have Two Children
Heather has two children named Adam and Caitlin with Barrie. Both Adam and Caitlin Cassidy have followed in their parent’s footsteps.
Unlike their parents, Adam and Caitlin Cassidy like to keep a low profile and have not been seen often in the public eye. However, the two have had their brushes with the media due to their parents’ fame.
Adam Cassidy
Adam Cassidy currently works for the International Cricket Council. His work involves promoting the game of Cricket in the East Asia-Pacific region.
He has worked closely with many countries and regions in the Oceania islands near Australia, such as Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Fiji. Much of his job revolves around traveling through those regions.
Travelling has been a big part of Adam’s life since before he started his profession as he often used to volunteer abroad and even lived for a year in a small village on Vanuatu’s Port Villa outskirts called Mele.
Adam is incredibly close to his father, Barrie, due to their shared love of cricket and the two even coauthored an op-ed piece about cricket for ABC.
Caitlin Cassidy
Caitlin Cassidy has followed in her mother’s footsteps and is working in journalism. She is currently a Breaking News Reporter for Guardian Australia.
She has been employed in the position since August 2021 and worked at Shepparton News as a Journalist before that. She also started her career there in September 2020 as an intern.
More About Heather Family
Heather was born in Victoria to her parents Fergus Ewart and Honor Ewart. Heather had three siblings growing up named Lizzy, John, and Alistair Ewart.
According to an extensive interview and biography that ABC did on the journalist, her father Fergus, was the shire president. Heather has stated that she grew up on a sheep, cattle, and wheat farm in central Victoria.
Heather has often stated that her parents were initially hesitant when it came to her desire to forge a path in journalism, and has said that her father once entreated her to search for a career in law.
However, these opinions were based more around the sayings of her father’s peers than his own, so, when he and his wife saw how passionate Ewart was towards journalism, they relented and even ended up supporting her.
In the journalist’s own words, she was always made to feel like she could achieve anything, due to the love and support of her parents.
Both Fergus and Honor have long since passed. Though Fergus’s date of passing has not been revealed to the public, Honor passed way in late 2017.
2017 was a sad year for Heather as she also lost her sister Lizzy the same year. Lizzie Ewart was born in 1967 and was an artist.
Heather has often talked about how much she adored Lizzy and her art. She also held a memorial for her sister alongside her daughter by introducing her work at Murchison Heritage Centre during its opening.
Sadly, her brother John has also long since passed, but like his father, his date of passing has not been revealed to the public. Little is known about Alistair Ewart.
