Joseph Heath Shuler (born December 31, 1971) is an American businessman, former NFL quarterback, and former United States Representative representing the 11th congressional district of North Carolina from 2007 to 2013. He was a member of the Blue Dog Coalition and the Democratic Party. Shuler established a reputation for himself in Congress by criticising the leadership of his party, which he felt had gone too far to the left.
He campaigned against Nancy Pelosi for minority leader in the House of
Representatives in 2010. He knew he’d lose, but he also believed he’d rise to fame as a conservative and moderate Democratic leader. He was a leader of the Blue Dog Democrats, who saw their numbers plummet in the 2010 election, and he had a lesser prominence in the national media than he had before. Shuler’s congressional district included the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, with Asheville as its major city. Shuler announced his resignation from the House on February 2, 2012, after a new district map eliminated half of Asheville from the district, making it much more Republican. Shuler did not seek re-election to a fourth term.
