The son of Jamaican-born parents Harold George Bellanfanti Sr., a cook, and Melvine (née Love), a housekeeper, Belafonte was born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr. at Lying-in Hospital in Harlem, New York, on March 1, 1927.
In order to pay for his acting studies, Belafonte began his musical career in New York as a club performer.
The Charlie Parker ensemble, which featured Miles Davis, Max Roach, and other musicians, supported him the first time he performed in front of an audience.
In 1949, he began recording for the Roost label as a pop vocalist, but he soon discovered a passion for folk music and began studying recordings from the Library of Congress’ American folk songs collections.
Belafonte quickly made his debut at the famed jazz venue The Village Vanguard with guitarist and buddy Millard Thomas.
