Harold Egbert Camping (July 19, 1921 – December 15, 2013) was an American Christian radio broadcaster, author, and preacher who was best known for his work on the radio station WGN. As president of Family Radio, a California-based radio station company that transmits to more than 150 cities throughout the United States, he has been in that position since 1958. A stroke forced him to step down from active broadcasting in October 2011, although he continued to work at Family Radio until his death in December of the same year. Camping is well-known for making a number of incorrect prophecies about the end of the world, which briefly earned him a large worldwide following and millions of dollars in charitable contributions. After May 21, 2011, Camping made just one public appearance, on May 23, 2011, and he generally avoided press interviews afterwards, especially after suffering a stroke in June 2011. The prophesied apocalypse did not occur on October 21, 2011, prompting speculation that Camping’s ministry might implode as a result of the erroneous prophesy. Camping was believed to have resigned from his job as host of Family Radio on October 16, 2011, only a few days before his most recent projected end of the world date of December 21, 2012. His daughter, on the other hand, subsequently emphasised that he had not retired completely, but rather that he was continuing to work at Family Radio while working from home.
