Hard-Fi is an English indie pop band that was founded in Staines, Surrey, in 2003. They have released two studio albums. Aside from Richard Archer (lead vocals and guitar), the band consists of Kai Stephens (bass guitar and backing vocals), Steve Kemp, and others (drums and backing vocals). On the 6th of May 2013, founding member Ross Phillips (guitar and backing vocals) decided to leave the band; however, he returned in 2014 to help promote the release of the Best of… CD as well as a one-off concert on the 13th of February 2014. Following the success of their third song, “Hard to Beat,” which peaked at number three on the UK Singles List, they went on to release additional hit singles such as “Cash Machine” and “Living for the Weekend,” which all peaked at number five on the chart.
Despite receiving widespread critical acclaim (NME named it the Album of the Year, and it was nominated for the Mercury Prize as well as two Brit Awards, for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act), their debut album Stars of CCTV didn’t debut at No. 1 on the UK albums chart until six months later, on January 22, 2006. It debuted at number 6 on the charts when it first came out. Once Upon a Time in the West, the band’s second studio album, was released on September 3, 2007, and debuted at number one in the charts in its first week of release. Killer Sounds, the band’s third studio album, which includes the songs “Good for Nothing,” “Fire in the House,” and “Bring It On,” was released on August 19, 2011, and debuted at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart the following week. Despite the fact that Hard-Fi is usually regarded to be a member of the indie rock movement, the band has said that they are strongly inspired by soul and dance music on their music.
