Canadian jazz musician Guido Basso played with Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass big band. Basso toured North America with vocalist Pearl Bailey and her husband, drummer Louis Bellson, and their orchestra beginning in 1958 and continuing through his 1960 transfer to Toronto.
Basso developed into a studio trumpeter and occasionally harmonica player there. Basso was appointed music director of CBLT’s Nightcap in 1963, a position he kept until 1967. Later, he worked as a performer and held a number of music director positions with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington were among the big band musicians who performed at performances he produced and directed in Toronto. Basso played with Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass for more than 20 years and was one of the band’s original members. Mia Basso Noble, a musician and songwriter, was the only child Basso and his wife Kristin had. Cancer claimed Mia’s life in September 2013.
