Penner well known for being the chairman of Walmart since June 5, 2015, a position he got after the previous chairman, Rob Walton, stepped down.

He began work as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs Group, Inc, a multinational financial services company and investment bank in New York. Penner then joined Walmart as an employee. He also worked as a General Partner at Peninsula Capital, an early-stage venture capital fund, from 1997 to 2000.
From 2000-2002, Penner was the Senior Vice President of Finance and Strategy for Walmart.com while from 2002 to 2005, he worked as the Senior Vice President and CFO of Wal-Mart Japan. For over 20 years, he held several positions at the company before his biggest promotion. In 2015, Penner ascended to become the chairman of Walmart’s Board of Directors. He became the third person to serve as chairperson, replacing his father-in-law, Rob Walton. The company’s first chairman was its founder Sam Walton.
He was first elected to the corporation’s board in 2008 and served as a member of the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee and as the chairman of the Technology and eCommerce Committee.
Greg has also served on other company boards such as in Cuil, Inc., eHarmony, Inc., Teach for America, and 99Bill Corporation (Shanghai). He was a member of the board of directors of Baidu, Inc., from 2004 to 2017 and also on the board of directors of Hyatt Hotels Corporation from 2007 to 2014.
