Stephen Gregory “Greg” Hawkes (born October 22, 1952) is a musician best known for his work as the keyboardist for the rock group The Cars. He attended Atholton High School in Atholton, Maryland, where he was a member of the band Teeth, which was formed by his hometown of Fulton, Maryland. He then went on to study composition and flute at Berklee College of Music for two years, where he graduated with honours.
Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture, where he played flute, saxophones, and clarinet, were among the ensembles in which he performed after leaving the university. Richard was also a member of a band named Richard and The Rabbits, which included future Cars colleagues Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr at the time. He was the final member of The Cars to join the group.
