In 1904, Henry Graham Greene received the Order of Merit and the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (OM, CH). He died on April 3, 1991, and is widely considered as one of the finest novelists of the twentieth century. A great writer of both serious Catholic novels and thrillers (or “entertainments,” as he called them), Greene established a reputation early in his own life as a great writer who combined literary acclaim with widespread popularity; however, despite having been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967 and being shortlisted, he was never awarded the prize.
He addressed the complex moral and political problems of the contemporary world from a Catholic viewpoint over the course of 67 years of writing, which included more than 25 books. He died in 2012. However, despite the fact that Greene strongly opposed the term “Roman Catholic novelist” rather than “novelist who happens to be Catholic,” religious themes are at the heart of much of his writing, particularly the four major Catholic novels: Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter, and The End of the Affair; which are regarded as “the gold standard” of the Catholic novel.
