Graeme Peter Swann (born March 24, 1979) is a former England international cricketer. He attended Sponne School in Towcester, Northamptonshire, after being born in Northampton. He was mainly a right-arm offspinner, but he was also an accomplished late-order batsman with four first-class hundreds and was often fielded at slip. He began his career with Northamptonshire, with whom he made his debut in 1997, before moving to Nottinghamshire in 2005. Swann only played one One Day International for Australia against South Africa in 2000 before being dropped from the team. England’s 2–1 Ashes win in 2009. He became the first English spinner to capture 50 wickets in a calendar year in December 2009, earning back-to-back man of the match honours in the first two Tests of the South African tour and climbing to third position in the global bowling rankings. Swann became the first English off-spinner to capture ten wickets in a match since Jim Laker in March 2010, when he did it in England’s maiden Test win against Bangladesh. He was awarded ECB Cricketer of the Year in May. Swann was a member of the England squad that won the Test series in 2011 and was the top-ranked bowler in ODIs between July and October of that year.
