English fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner MBE was born in 1990, and her creations “propose a particular sense of cultural luxury that mixes European tradition with an Afro-Atlantic ethos.” Her designs are distinguished by a fusion of sportswear and tailoring as well as her passion for adding a touch of sophisticated elegance to daily wardrobe basics. She started the London-based brand Wales Bonner in 2014 with a focus on males.
Wales Bonner has received numerous awards since founding her eponymous label, including Emerging Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards (2015), the LVMH Young Designer Prize (2016), Winner of the British Fashion Council/ Vogue Designer Fashion Fund (2019), and CFDA International Men’s Designer of the Year (2021), and she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in June 2022 for services to fashion. Wales Bonner is currently the Head of the Department of Fashion Design at the Vienna University of Applied Arts.
In 2019 she curated her debut show, A Time For New Dreams, for the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, which was an exploration of magical resonances within black cultural and aesthetic practices, and focused on the shrine “as a symbolic pathway for imagining different worlds and possibilities”. The exhibition took its name from a collection of essays by Nigerian writer Ben Okri and featured work by several artists (including Chino Amobi, Black Audio Film Collective, David Hammons, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Liz Johnson Artur, Rashid Johnson, Kapwani Kiwanga, Eric N. Mack, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya), as well as footage of African-American writer Ishmael Reed.
