By 1976, DeAngelo had been promoted to sergeant and was in charge of the Exeter Police Department’s “Joint Attack on Burglary” program.  He then served in Auburn from August 1976 to July 1979, when he was arrested for shoplifting a hammer and dog repellent; he was sentenced to six months probation and fired that October.
