Originally from the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band that was established in 1999 and is well-known for their dramatic stage performances and extensive touring.

Gypsy music serves as an inspiration for much of the band’s sound. According to the band, accordion and violin (as well as on certain albums, saxophone) are combined with punk and dub music. Everything Is Illuminated, in which the band’s main vocalist Eugene Hütz co-starred with Elijah Wood in a dramedy and adventure tale about the Nazi purges in Ukraine, was one of the band’s most well-known cinematic appearances, and it was also the band’s most successful. The whole ensemble was present for a single shot in which they performed a brass band in a performance that featured the Star Spangled Banner, which was filmed on location in New Orleans. “Bublitschki,” a classic Yiddish song, was also performed by the group.

The film’s soundtrack includes the song “Start Wearing Purple” by Gogol Bordello, who also performed it. Gogol Bordello also has their own documentary, Gogol Bordello Non-Stop, which is available on DVD. The band’s development is chronicled in this documentary, which was shot in 2008. For Coca Cola’s Euro 2012 commercial campaign, the band produced a song called Let’s Get Crazy, which was released in 2012.
