Gideon Moi Career

After Gideon’s father retired from politics in 2002, he ran for Baringo Central Constituency, which had been formerly held by his father since 1955. He represented the people of Baringo Central for one term, 2002-2007.

He also wields the most influence with his father who still has considerable clout in the KANU party, the former ruling party in Kenya, of which Gideon is a member.

The scale of corruption taken out in Kenya by family and associates of its former president, Daniel Arap Moi, was disclosed in a secret report which alleges that more than £1 billion of government money was stolen during his 24-year rule. Moi’s regime, which came to an end in 2002, has long been considered one of Africa’s most corrupt, but the scope of the graft was never revealed in so much detail.

The 110-page report by international risk advisors Kroll details assets still allegedly held by the Moi family and their staff in 28 countries, including hotels and places in South Africa and the United States, three hotels in London, a £4 million house in Surrey, a 10,000-hectare ranch in Australia, and a £2 million penthouse flat in Knightsbridge.

It proclaims the Moi family laundered $400 million through a complex web of reports in Kenya, and Frankfurt. It also alleged that they and a handful of associates own a bank in Geneva, Belgium that was used to launder money from Kenya and uncovered a web of secret bank accounts, shell companies, and dummy trusts registered in tax havens, including the Cayman Islands. Moi’s sons, Philip and Gideon, were reported to be worth £384m and £550m.

Moi was the leader of the KANU political party in Kenya. Gideon has been groomed as a presidential candidate by his father. In the 2017 general elections, he rallied KANU to support Uhuru Kenyatta for a second term, despite Moi’s apprehension about the candidature which also included his political nemesis, William Samoei Arap Ruto.

Moi announced his intentions and was expected to run in the 2022 Kenyan presidential elections, which would test his political capabilities and his ability to fundraise, either from his wealth or from his supporters.
