Giakanja Secondary School Description

Giakanja Secondary School is a government boys boarding school located in Kianjogu Sub location, Karundu Location, Tetu Division, Tetu Constituency in Nyeri County. For further information please see the contacts below.

The school was started in 1962 with one classroom and an office, built through the American AID program. It was opened on 19th May 1962 by a Mr. G. Mennen Williams, the then U.S Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. It admitted its first students of 9 boys and remained a boys-only day school until 1997 when it started admitting both boys and girls. The girls were phased out in 1993.
Between 1997 and 1995 the school was mixed secondary school and its enrollment rose to 800 because there was acute demand for secondary education for both boys and girls.

In 1995, day schooling was phased out, making the school a pure boys boarding school. Unlike other schools of its time, the school did not start the A-level classes that offered Advanced level curriculum. However, the school’s physical facilities were greatly enhanced between 1978-2014 so that today the school has Formally a DEB school now sponsored by County Education Board.
