Gerry Callahan METCO
On September 29, 2003, during a segment called ‘headlines’ where they read and comment on current news reports, he and his morning co-host John Dennis made remarks that were deemed racist while debating a story about an escaped gorilla.
METCO is a state system that transports students from the inner city of Boston to suburban schools nearby. The commentaries compared gorillas to poor, mostly African-American children. WEEI General Manager Tom Baker suspended the two hosts for two days but extended the suspension to two weeks after the Blue Cross-Blue Shield pulled $27,000 in advertising and donated the money to METCO in exchange.
By ceasing all ads involving the voices of John Dennis or Gerry Callahan, Dunkin’ Donuts responded. Both hosts apologized and were sent to the sensitivity training. WEEI has also decided to provide free advertisements on the radio station for the METCO program. In November 2003 Julie Kahn took over from WEEI General Manager Tom Baker. Station managers denied there was a connection between the METCO incident and Baker’s replacement
