Born May 18, 1952, in Poteet, Texas, Strait attended Pearsall High School where he started his musical career by performing in a rock and roll garage band.
Following high school, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Hawaii. Once there, he joined an Army-sanctioned country band.
After spending four years in the Army, Strait was discharged and began a post-secondary education at Southwest Texas State University, eventually graduating with a degree in Agriculture.
In his college years, Strait joined the country band Stoney Ridge and renamed the group the Ace in the Hole Band where he quickly became the lead.
Strait then worked with the band for several years and later began his solo career releasing his first single for MCA Records, titled “Unwound”, in 1981 which topped number six on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart that year.
