George Hincapie (born June 29, 1973) is an American former road bicycle racer who raced as a professional between 1994 and 2012. He won the Tour de France in 1994 and the Tour de France in 2012. Hincapie was a major domestique for Lance Armstrong, and he was the only rider to support Armstrong in all seven of his Tour de France wins, which have since been revoked by the organisation. Hincapie also worked as a domestique for Alberto Contador in 2007 and for Cadel Evans in 2011, both of whom were victorious in the Tour de France at the time. Lance Armstrong was one of just two riders in Tour de France history to have been on nine Tour-winning teams, although all seven of his Tour wins have subsequently been revoked due to doping violations.
Hincapie has started a Tour de France record-breaking 17 times. In the wake of his doping admission, he was stripped of his rights to compete in three Tours. In 2012, he finished his 16th and last Tour, tying the previous record held by Joop Zoetemelk. A statement on Hincapie’s website, published on October 10, 2012, acknowledged that he had used performance-enhancing substances and confirmed that he had been contacted by the US Federal Investigators and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in relation to his experiences with doping. His acceptance of a six-month suspension beginning September 1, 2012, and ending March 1, 2013, as well as the erasure of all race results between May 31, 2004, and July 31, 2006, was confirmed later that day in a statement issued by his representatives.
