George Halvorson (born February 28, 1947) was the chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente from 2002 to 2013, until stepping down on July 1, 2013. Following Halvorson’s resignation as chairman of the Kaiser Permanente board of directors, the board of directors of Kaiser Permanente chose Bernard Tyson to succeed him as CEO. Halvorson now serves as the Chair of California’s First 5 Commission. Halvorson was given a four-year term as Chair by Governor Brown.
Tobacco taxes are used by the Commission to give assistance and education to children in California from birth to five. Halvorson is also the Institute for InterGroup Understanding’s chairman and CEO. The Institute focuses on racism, prejudice, and discrimination, as well as intergroup tension and conflict. Ending Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Disparities in American Health Care is Halvorson’s most current book on health-care reform. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Halvorson was chair of the health governors. He also served as the President of The International Federation of Health Plans. He also served as the president of The Partners for Quality Care and the American Association of Health Plans. He’s now working on a book on InterGroup Conflict Resolution.
