Gary McAllister MBE (born 25 December 1964 in Newarthill, Motherwell, Scotland) is a former Scottish professional footballer who played for Motherwell. McAllister was mainly a midfielder throughout his nineteen-year professional career, which was marked by success. He began his professional career with local club Motherwell before making the move south of the border to join Leicester City at the age of twenty. After that, he went on to play for Leeds United, and he subsequently had stints with Coventry City, which were interspersed with a short, but successful, career as a Liverpool player. He also played for his country’s national team for nine years, earning 57 caps and scoring five goals in the process. His leadership abilities were recognised, and he went on to serve four successful years as the captain of Scotland, as well as two seasons as the captain of Leeds United. In honour of his contributions to football, he was given an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list of 2001 in honour of his achievements. As his playing career came to an end, he made the decision to go into the management side of the game. When he was named manager of Coventry City Football Club in April 2002, it was his second stint at the club that he first accomplished this. He resigned from his position a month later and did not return to management until he returned to Elland Road in January 2008 to take over as manager from Dennis Wise. In April 2011, McAllister was appointed as the Caretaker Manager of Premier League team Aston Villa, after the illness of the club’s then-manager Gérard Houllier. McAllister had previously served as Houllier’s Assistant Manager before to Houllier’s illness.
