Gary S. Gensler (born October 18, 1957) formerly served as the 11th chairman of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission from May 26, 2009 until January 3, 2014, under President Barack Obama.
In the United States, Gensler served as Undersecretary of the Treasury (1999-2001) and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (1997-1999). He was appointed by President Barack Obama to head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which oversees $5 trillion in transactions, or about 9% of the global market. On May 26, 2009, Gensler was sworn in. His current term as CFTC Commissioner expired on April 13, 2012, although he was permitted to serve as a holdover until January 3, 2014, soon after President Obama selected Timothy Massad to succeed him as Chairman of the Commission.
