Gary Allen (American football) Wife: Was Gary Allen Married?
The news of Gary Allen’s passing has left a void in the world of football, as we remember the incredible career of the University of Hawaii’s most prolific rusher. As we reflect on his accomplishments, it is also important to acknowledge the presence of a special person in his life. Gary Allen was indeed a married man.
During his tenure as a Rainbow Warrior tailback from 1978 to 1981, Allen etched his name in the history books, setting the University of Hawaii’s career rushing record with an impressive 3,451 yards. His outstanding performances on the field earned him the respect and admiration of teammates and fans alike. Jesse Sapolu, a former UH offensive lineman who went on to win four Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers, spoke of Allen’s enduring legacy, stating, “If you put everything together, we’ve had some great running backs… But everybody knows he’s right up there all time. It’s a sad moment for all of us.”
Known for his determined running style and his signature flapping shoulder pads, Allen was a force to be reckoned with. His commitment and dedication were evident in every practice, where he would push himself to the limit. Brian Derby, a former UH lineman and experienced football camp coach, recalled Allen’s unparalleled work ethic, saying, “He ran so frickin’ hard… I’ve never seen anyone, from then until now, practice as hard as him… He would take the ball and run all the way to the end zone. And then run back to the huddle. And then on the next play, he’d run all the way to the end zone again.”
Beyond his college football achievements, Allen’s talents caught the attention of the Houston Oilers, who selected him in the sixth round of the 1983 NFL Draft. He had the privilege of serving as the backup to Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell and also played for the Dallas Cowboys.
In 1998, Allen’s contributions to the University of Hawaii were celebrated when he was inducted into the UH Circle of Honor. During the banquet held in his honor, Allen expressed his gratitude to his teammates, acknowledging their enduring friendship and the impact they had on his life. Brian Derby emphasized the importance of their bond, stating, “We’re here because of the person you are, not the player… Nobody remembers us as players. We’re has-beens. But they remember how we treated people.”
In recent years, Allen continued to foster connections with his former teammates by joining them on road trips from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to support the University of Hawaii football team. Rick Nakashima, a close friend of Allen’s for over 40 years and the organizer of these trips, fondly recalled Allen’s humility, humor, and positive presence, remarking on the loss that his passing represents.
Gary Allen leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Hilda, daughter Adrian, and son Jaden, a former UH receiver. As we honor his memory and celebrate his accomplishments, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy as both a remarkable athlete and a devoted husband and father will forever be remembered.
