Gareth O’Callaghan is diagnosed with a neurodegenerative illness, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).
He suffered from depression from the 1990s to 2015. He was at his low in 1999 and had severely lost weight which is why he had to take anti-depressants too.
Fast forward to 2016, Callaghan suffered from a pounding heart and a year later, he fell over a sofa at his workplace. He then announced to his audiences that he has Parkinson’s disease via on-air in 2018.
Gareth was also diagnosed with the MSA in the same year after which he retired from his work. But he returned back to radio in January of 2022.
Speaking with RSVP Live, Callaghan described his health as haywire and his illness as a strange journey. But he is glad that he is being treated by the specialists at Mater hospital.
What Is Multiple System Atrophy?
Multiple System Atrophy, also known as MSA, is a rare neurodegenerative disorder.
It is a combination of multiple symptoms including impairments to balance, difficulty with movement, bladder dysfunction, sleep disturbance, and many more.
As per Cleveland Clinic, only about 4 in 100,000 people suffer from this disease.
