Gareth Hock, born Gareth Charnock in Wigan, England, is a former professional rugby league footballer. In the Betfred Championship, he was a second-rower, loose forward, or prop for the Leigh Centurions.
After being sidelined for two years due to injury, Gareth Hock returned to action for the Wigan Warriors in their Rugby League Challenge Cup match against the Salford City Reds on May 19, 2006. 4-16 was the Warriors’ defeat.
Hock gave a strong showing despite the outcome. In the subsequent match against St. Helens, a rival, he participated and scored a try, but the Wigan Warriors lost 14-28.
His impressive performance earned him a spot in the Great Britain test squad to face New Zealand just one month after his comeback.
Hock was chosen in September 2008 for the England Rugby League World Cup training squad and in October 2008 for the final 24-man England squad.
Gareth Hock played in the second row as England defeated Papua New Guinea in the opening match of Group A.
Gareth tested positive for cocaine, per testing on an “A” sample of urine obtained after a match between the Wigan Warriors and the Salford City Reds in June 2009.
A second “B” sample also contained benzoylecgonine, the main metabolite of cocaine. He was facing a two-year ban from rugby league after failing to submit an appeal against the mandatory ban in August 2009.
