Gabor Maté is a doctor and author who is Hungarian-Canadian and specializes in childhood development, trauma, and possible lasting effects on physical and mental health. He has experience working with individuals who have chronic health conditions including HIV along with co-occurring mental health and substance use difficulties. He has a background in family practice.

Trauma characterized Maté’s own early existence, which included losing family members in the Holocaust and growing up in a stranger’s care for more than five weeks. He thinks that this trauma has persisted throughout adulthood, especially in response to imagined abandonment threats.
Maté continued his schooling after immigrating to Canada in 1956 and eventually received his M.D. in general family practice from the University of British Columbia. He spent more than 20 years in private family practice, and for seven years he served as the medical coordinator of the palliative care unit at Vancouver Hospital.
Also, for 12 years, he worked as the staff doctor at the Portland Hotel, a housing and resource center in the heart of Vancouver.
In his book “In the Land of Hungry Ghosts,” Maté discusses his experiences working with individuals who have substance use issues. He has also been a strong supporter of supervised safe injection facilities, standing up for the Insite doctors when the federal Minister of Health accused them of being unethical.

Rae Maté is Gabor Maté’s spouse. The couple got married in 1969; she is an artist who graduated from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Daniel Maté, Aaron Maté, and Hannah Rose Maté are their three children.
At solo, group, and juried exhibitions across Canada, Rae’s acrylic and oil paintings have been included. Remember, we’re all in this together, Rae emphasized the importance of unity in a statement she published on April 3, 2020.
