Freeman McNeil (born April 22, 1959) is a former professional American football player who was drafted third overall in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
The 5’11”, 214-pound running back attended UCLA, where he was a two-time all-Pac-10 pick after guiding Banning High School to the Los Angeles City football championship. He grabbed a deflected ball from quarterback Jay Schroeder that was tipped by USC defensive back Jeff Fisher and ran 57 yards for the deciding score with two minutes remaining in the Bruins’ 20-17 victory. From 1981 through 1992, McNeil was a member of the New York Jets for 12 seasons.
He was a part of the Jets’ “Two Headed Monster” backfield with colleague Johnny Hector in the mid to late 1980s, a duo that rated among the league’s best. With 8,074 yards rushing when he retired, he was the Jets’ all-time top rusher; he was overtaken by Curtis Martin and now stands second in Jets history. McNeil led the NFL in running yards with 786 in 1982. He was the first Jet in league history to lead the league in running yards.
He is one of just a handful running backs in NFL history who has averaged 4.0 yards per carry in each of his seasons. In 1990-1992, McNeil was the main plaintiff in a lawsuit that resulted in the NFL’s Plan B free agency scheme, which allowed clubs to protect 37 players, being overturned by a jury decision.
McNeil and the other seven claimants were designated as protected players by their respective clubs. The system was considered excessively restrictive and antitrust laws were broken. Freeman, on the other hand, was not one of the four plaintiffs who received damages. The action is seen as a significant step forward in the NFL Players Association’s pursuit of free agency rights. He was elected to the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Freeman now resides in Huntington, Long Island, New York.
