DJ Kool DJ Red Alert (born Fred Crute on November 27, 1956) is an American disc jockey who came to prominence on the radio station 98.7 Kiss-FM in New York City, and is widely regarded as a founding member of the hip hop movement. Such groups and musicians as A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Black Sheep have all credited Red Alert for bringing them to the attention of the public. He grew raised in the Harlem neighbourhood of New York City. At one point in the late 1980s, Red, who is of Antiguan descent, had a tiny hip hop management firm called Red Alert Productions, which was responsible for managing the careers of Native Tongues artists such as the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and Monie Love.

Red Alert Productions, along with Chris “Baby Chris” Lighty’s Violator, was the only significant hip-hop management option to Russell Simmons’ Rush Artist Management (which he hated) and Cold Chillin’ Records’ management division throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. For more than 11 years, Kool DJ Red Alert could be heard on New York City radio stations such as 98.7 Kiss-FM and Hot 97. He also worked for Hot 97 for seven years
