Smith captained both Kimberley and Transvaal and was instrumental in the formation of the Transvaal Cricket Union. He won many trophies as a sprinter. He was a quick scoring batsman, a wicket-keeper as well as a change bowler. Not much is known of either his pre-cricket background or his post-cricket life.
