On November 6, 1946, Frederick Ralph Cornelius Penner was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is a Canadian children’s music singer who travels extensively across North America. From 1985 until 1997, he hosted a 30-minute television programme called Fred Penner’s Place, which broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Nickelodeon collaborated in the production of the show between 1989 and 1990. Penner’s parents, Lydia Agathe Penner (née Winters, 1913-2005) and Edward W. Penner, welcomed him into the world on November 6, 1946. (d. 1971). Penner had four siblings: one elder sister, Carol, one older brother, Wesley, one younger brother, Terry, and one younger sister, Susan. Carol was Penner’s older sister, while Wesley was Penner’s older brother (d. 1970).
Penner was born in the Canadian city of Winnipeg. Penner started making up songs when he was four years old while riding the bus with his mother to school. When he was in elementary school, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began participating in school choruses and pageants.
Music therapy was identified as a therapeutic tool by him as a result of his sister Susan’s Down syndrome diagnosis. The Gilbert and Sullivan operettas at Kelvin High School, where Penner earned his high school graduation, gave him the opportunity to perform in the main parts.
In the years after his graduation from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and psychology, he spent time working with mentally and physically challenged children, providing them with comfort and entertainment via musical instruments. In 1977, he met Odette Heyn, a choreographer and future wife, with whom he co-founded a children’s dance theatre group in New York City. Penner agreed to take part in a recording session, which culminated in the release of the CD The Cat Came Back, which started his career and established him as one of Canada’s most popular children’s entertainment performers.
In 1984, he had an appearance on the children’s television programme The Elephant Show, when he sang the song “The Cat Came Back.” For his efforts in utilising music and singing to amuse and educate his young audience, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1991. In 2011, he was inducted into the Order of Manitoba as a Member of the Order.
