“Curly” Fred “Curly” Curly In addition to his time with the Harlem Globetrotters, Neal (born May 19, 1942) is an American basketball player most known for his shaved head and appearance with the team. Following in the footsteps of Marques Haynes, Neal rose to the position of featured ballhandler for the Trotters, playing an important part in the team’s exhibition act. He was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, and attended Greensboro-Dudley High School, which has been a perennial force in the state. He was quickly followed by future Atlanta Hawks All-Star Lou Hudson and NFL Hall of Fame tight end Charlie Sanders, who were both there at the time. To the contrary of Hudson and Sanders, who both attended the University of Minnesota, Neal attended Johnson C. Smith University in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina.
He averaged 23.1 points per game during his time at Smith and was selected to the CIAA All-Guard team. Neal was a member of the Harlem Globetrotters for 22 seasons (1963–1985), participating in more than 6,000 games in 97 different nations.
His shaved head gave him the moniker Curly Howard, which is an homage to Curly Howard from the Three Stooges, and helped him become one of the most recognised Globetrotters. A cartoon version of Neal appeared alongside several other Globetrotters in the Harlem Globetrotters animated cartoon series, as well as its offshoot, The Super Globetrotters, which aired in the 1970s. The cartoon Globetrotters also made three cameos in The New Scooby-Doo Movies, one of which was in the first season. As part of “Curly Neal Weekend,” the Harlem Globetrotters announced on January 11, 2008 that Neal’s number 22 will be retired on February 15 in a special ceremony at Madison Square Garden as part of the team’s “Curly Neal Weekend.” Only five Globetrotters have had their numbers retired in the team’s 82-year existence, including Wilt Chamberlain (13) and Meadowlark Lemon (36) as well as Marques Haynes (20) and Goose Tatum (50).
