The furry oracle of Val-d’Espoir, Quebec, Fred la Marmotte, was discovered dead overnight on Thursday, just hours before he was supposed to predict whether spring would come early or late.
The depressing announcement was made by the event’s coordinator in Val-d’Espoir on Thursday following about 40 minutes of music and dancing.
Roberto Blondin made a sad observation in front of a large audience: “In life, the only thing that is certain is that nothing is certain.
“Well, this year, it’s accurate. It’s regrettable yet accurate. I am here to inform you of Fred’s passing.
Blondin claimed that while attempting to wake the animal up, he discovered it to be dead. He claimed to have “no vital signs” and provided data. At the age of nine, Fred passed away during hibernation in the late October or early December.
Blondin changed the subject by saying that Fred adored kids and would have preferred a kid to cover for him on Thursday.
A little audience member sporting a groundhog hat was then summoned up to the stage and given a plush groundhog. He said winter will last another six weeks.
Everyone in the audience was startled to hear of the rodent’s passing, according to Renée Laurendeau, a representative for the annual Groundhog Day celebration who identifies herself as Fred’s press agent.
